Milk Ice Cream in Hokkaido, Japan

Actually, they call it “softcream” or “soft cream”¬†!

It was around April 2010, I traveled to Hokkaido of Japan with my family.

Hokkaido is the most northern island of Japan.

We tried three milk ice cream stores in Hokkaido’s Sapporo, Otaru, and the New Chitose International Airport.

Above: I was at the Sapporo JR station, and this was my first taste of milk ice cream in Hokkaido. Well, it was great since I have nothing to compare with.

Then, we traveled to Otaru (in pink below).

Otaru is called the music city. I don’t know the reason, but there are many stores selling music box. My wife and I bought one for our to be born daughter (Due on Oct 2010), and one for our niece (CCC). Oh, and I bought one for my wife, and she bought one for her best friend’s daughter.

Let’s get back to the ice cream I tried in Otaru.

Nakayama Dairy Farm, Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan

This is the Nakayama Dairy Farm in Otaru. The milk ice cream is a lot smoother, and a lot cheaper (280 YEN = US$2.80) than the Sapporo JR station’s. We ate about 8 milk ice cream per person overall. It’s so good that my wife and I keep going back again and again. The level of sweetness is very acceptable even for my pregnant wife who has gestational diabetes. Her blood sugar level did not went up too much, still under 120 (US scale).

On the last day of our trip in Hokkaido, we visited a milk ice cream store in the New Chitose International Airport. This airport was newly built. It was only one month old. Opened around March 2010. Very clean, I mean, very very clean!!! ¬†Amazing!!! Compare to airport like San Francisco (SFO), or Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), and don’t even mention those in mainland China…. The Japanese did an excellent job keeping things clean and nice. Oh, yeah, back to the ice cream.

Well, I don’t know the name of this store in writing. In English translation, it called “snow” “shadow”. This milk ice cream is a better than Otaru’s although it is more costly. Like 480 YEN (US $4.80). It’s so good that I had two or three. To compare with Nakayama Dairy Farm’s, it is even smoother although the level of sweetness and milk are as good.
